2017 season
Medieval Normandy : 850th anniversary of the death of Empress Matilda
Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th of July
Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd of July
Free Show on Saturday 29th July at 4 pm at Rouen Cathedral
The Mortemer Royal Abbey (Lisors), a 12th century Cistercian abbey listed as a Historic Monument, presents its new 2017 show, dedicated to Empress Matilda, benefactress in Normandy and Rouen, and mother of the Plantagenet dynasty.
In the heart of the beech forest of Lyons-la-Forêt, the Mortemer Abbey is the witness of a prestigious past. Founded in the 12th century by Henry I Beauclerc (also known as Henry I of England), 4th son of William the Conqueror, Mortemer was a place of pilgrimage for many Kings and Queens. Mathilde the Emperesse and her son Henri II Plantagenet built the church there in 3 years. Nowadays partly in ruins, the Abbey remains a place full of history.
The life of Empress Matilda will be narrated on the basis of quotes from rhymed chronicles of Normandy and England, as well as historical facts.
The show will consist of texts, dances and images of illuminations.

These medieval festivals are well-known in Normandy and beyond for the quality and authenticity of historical re-enactments, costumes made by hand in natural fabrics and high-level shows.
New troops that have never performed at the Abbey will offer interactive and educational activities for young and old alike. It will be possible to discover the daily life in the camps, demonstrations of fighting or even tournaments in which many riders and their horses will meet. New in 2017: tournaments with ponies in which children can participate will take place for the first time.
This year, you will also have the opportunity to meet the troop Les Galops de l'Histoire, through a medieval encampment and interactive activities with visitors, such as chivalry tournaments, equestrian games, knight fights and the Demonstration of the ballista.
In the afternoon a big show of Chivalry tournaments will take place at the edges of the ponds of the abbey, with the possibility for the public to settle on the natural bleachers to watch this show in unique conditions in France! During an hour, riders and fighters on foot offer a spectacle of high level, in the beautiful scenery of the majestic ponds of the Abbey.
